Learn by Doing - Doing is Different for Everyone
Nothing beats action, but it looks a little different for each person.
Right! One extra point to add here is that doing is different for everyone.
- people who want to become better writers must write more.
- people who want to create a business around a physical product find a way to make the product and sell it.
- people who want to make money through YouTube videos create more and better videos.
Regardless of what you want to become better at, no matter how much learning you do, most of your results will come from the actual action.
The value of learning
The act of doing does not mean that you can stop learning through reading, watching, and listening because there is always going to be value in the act of growing your knowledge.
In reality, to take full advantage of learning you should use a combination of what you have seen, read, listened to, watched, and done in your life.
Combine all learning with doing and reflection
You noticed when you look at the main picture of this post how most of the circle lands on doing, while small sections land on reading, watching, and listening.
Every one of us will have a different proportion of the circle on each of the four quadrants but the doing quadrant should always have the biggest proportion.
One of the best ways to get these quadrants to work together is to use reflection as a way to double down on the knowledge you have learned and put it into action.
If you learn something through what you have seen or listened to but don't take note of its relevance to your life, then it might as well be useless or just disappear from your mind unless you’re immediately doing something about it.
Write it down
In case you are the type of person who forgets easily, it would be wise for you to write down interesting observations throughout your day that you might be able to use in your life and write it down immediately. Seriously, don’t wait.
That’s why I always open my notes app, RemNote, whenever something pops into my mind.
Start doing when you get the chance
When you have the time to follow through with the interesting observations you have written down you can then turn them into action steps or flesh them out as needed.
Although it is not a rush, you will always have access to the notes that you have written down. Sometimes ideas take ages to cultivate, and that's okay.
Set a goal for yourself by doing something every day
Daily actions are much better than actions that only take place once a week, or once a month.
You probably have a very busy schedule, so even if you only take 15 or 20 minutes to do something that you know you will learn from, then take that time.
If you've got more time in the day to experiment with what you've learned through your observations then take that time to invest in your future self.
